Trinidad and Tobago's national footballers arrived in Chicago just after 6pm on Sunday for Wednesday's World Cup Qualifier.
Head coach Francisco Maturana and a 20-man squad checked in at the Chicago Marriot, South West hotel and will have their first training session at the Toyota Park from 6pm on Monday.
Maturana will have the services of defender Makan Hislop following his one match suspension but influential midfielder Dwight Yorke who captained the team in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Guatemala did not travel to Chicago and will not play on Wednesday. Yorke's niggling groin injury as well as an ankle blow received against Guatemala has forced him to miss the encounter and he was scheduled to return to Sunderland on Sunday.
A wonderful left footed strike which flew into net off Keon Daniel's boot to set the Hasely Crawford Stadium alight on 84 minutes was not enough to give Trinidad and Tobago three points as Saturday's 2010 World Cup qualifier ended in a 1-1 stalemate before 14000 fans.
T&T for most parts of the game looked a team on the rise but Carlos Gallardo silenced the home fans when he flicked an incoming free kick into the far corner past Marvin Phillip in added on time. The free kick call was doubtful as Daniel appeared to have made no contact with Marco Papa before Panama's Roberto Moreno blew for the foul. Carlos Santizo drove the subsequent free kick hard goalwards and Gallardo's faint touch caught Phillip off.
This country's most celebrated footballer, Dwight Yorke, will return to the “Soca Warriors” for the important World Cup qualification clash with Guatemala today at Hasely Crawford Stadium, from 5.30 pm.
Despite having to shrug off a niggling groin problem over the past couple days, the 36-year-old midfielder has expressed a feeling of excitement on his return to competitive international football against the Guatemalans.
Following yesterday’s final training session, Yorke said:“I feel good about
making a return and trying to help T&T again. Being here for the
game against England brought back a bit of that desire again.
Friday September 5, 2008 was a historic for Trinidad and Tobago following the creation of a chair for football—via the establishment of a women’s football clinic and the introduction of a Masters of Arts (MA) in Physical Education.
Visiting FIFA President Joseph Sepp Blatter brought these good tidings when he made a historic visit and signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between FIFA and UWI, at Campus Principal Prof Clement Sankat’s office, at UWI, St Augustine, yesterday.
