The Trinidad and Tobago Men’s senior football team, including the technical staff were handed cheques for outstanding salaries and fees at the Office of the Prime Minister at St Clair Avenue on Thursday, a day after the team returned from the Caribbean Cup Finals in Montego Bay.

It was the delivery of a promise the Government made to assist the TTFA and the National Team after members of the team had been awaiting payment for just under a year which eventually led to alarms being raised prior to the  Caribbean Cup final between T&T and Jamaica.

The monies paid out was part of a $10 million budget passed by Cabinet to assist the Team up until June 2016, just prior to the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States which T&T qualified for by reaching the last four of the Caribbean Cup.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Senior footballers succumbed to Jamaica  on penalty kicks but a second place finish at the Caribbean Cup Finals is still a proud achievement and leaves a lot to anticipate going forward.

That was the feeling of head coach Stephen Hart at the end of the match in which a Khaleem Hyland missed penalty gave Jamaica the 2014 title after both teams battled to a scoreless draw before a partisan Jamaican crowd at the Montego Bay Sports Complex. This was the second straight runner up finish for T&T after losing 1-0 to Cuba in the 2012 final.

There was disappointment all around in the T&T dressing room and at the team hotel afterwards but Hart told his players that they must take the experience with them and use it to their benefit going forward.

Warriors will take the field tonight

Trinidad and Tobago’s Men Senior Team will take the field in tonight’s Caribbean Cup Final against arch rivals Jamaica at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Team captain Kenwyne Jones issued a statement on Tuesday morning at the team camp at the Sunset Beach Resort saying that the team will not withdraw from the match because of unpaid wages contrary to media reports out of Trinidad.

Prior to the team’s training session on Monday evening in Montego Bay, Jones and his teammates met for close to 15 minutes with the team staff and Jones declared that though at that point there was uncertainty over the payment of outstanding monies, the team would infact play the final and deal with unfinished business afterwards.

CARIBBEAN CLASICO IN MONTEGO BAY

Trinidad and Tobago are one victory away from capturing their ninth Caribbean Cup title and they will attempt to overcome hosts Jamaica in what is expected to be a hotly contested “Caribbean Clasico” affair at the Montego Bay Sports Complex from 8pm (9pm TT time) on Tuesday.

Jamaica booked their passage in the final with a polished performance in a 2-0 victory over Haiti on Sunday night, a game which Stephen Hart and his men witnessed at the match venue. The victory has brought life to the Jamaican team and their supporters who are expected to make life difficult for the “Soca Warriors”  at what is undoubtedly the biggest regional rivalry.
