Pre-match: David Beckham is England's skipper against Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain and Dean Ashton is given his long-awaited international debut.

Ashton was set to make his first England appearance two years ago but suffered a broken ankle in training, and he has only just returned to full fitness and form.

Three goals in his last three Premier League games explained Fabio Capello's selection, but giving Beckham the armband was more intriguing.

It has been argued that the friendly at Hasely Crawford Stadium was to win the support of FIFA vice-president Jack Warner, and Beckham leading England out for the 59th time a public-relations exercise. Regardless of Capello's intentions, Warner has given England his support for their 2018 World Cup bid.

Capello's players also had a point to prove to their manager, and he starts with Jonathan Woodgate in defence for his first international appearance in 15 months.

Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry are paired in central midfield - which Rafael Benitez wants to do for Liverpool next season - Stewart Downing is on the left and Ashton starts in attack with Jermain Defoe.
