Kenwyne Jones was named 2007 T&T “Footballer of the Year” yesterday at the T&T Football Federation end of the season awards ceremony at the Trinidad Hilton on Sunday morning. Jones, who showed vast improvement during the season in the English Premiership, was not on hand to receive his award, as he flew back to Sunderland on Saturday to undergo treatment for the ligament injury he received in the match against England on June 1. Jones was a clearcut winner of the top prize, having also represented his country with distinction. Moruga-born Avanelle Isaas, aged 18, was voted the female “Player of the Year” for her outstanding performances for the national Under-20 and senior teams, as well as Joe Public and St Augustine Girls’ Senior Comprehensive. Leston Paul, who made his mark in the Under-17 World Cup in Korean, copped the youth male “Player of the Year” for the second straight year while Petrotrin’s Moriah Shade collected the female equivalent. W Connection, the top team in the Professional Football League, shared in three of the top awards. The “Savonetta Boys” were chosen “Team of the Year” while their coach, St Lucian Stuart Charles-Fevrier and manager Raymond McLean were the outstanding individuals in their categories (coach and administrator). Neil Brizan, who obtained his FIFA referees’ license in 2002, was the top male referee with Shane de Silva, who has been selected to officiate at the Beijing Olympics, the leading female referee. In the Super League, Randy Ramcharan, who played a leading role in helping debutants Harlem Strikers to enjoy a highly successful season, walked away with the “Most Valuable Player” award.
