CONCACAF DOWN TO TWELVE - Semi Final Round Fixtures Print E-mail
Twelve teams advanced to the Semifinal Round of the 2010 CONCACAF World Cup Qualification after winning their respective Stage 2 encounters last week.

The twelve victorious teams from Stage 2 have been placed into three groups of four.  Group 1 has Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Guatemala and USA, while Canada, Honduras, Jamaica and Mexico are in Group 2.  The third group (Group 3) is composed of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti and Surinam.

The semifinal round will have teams from each group facing each other in home-and-away encounters from 20 August - 19 November 2008.

The top two from each of the three groups will advance to the six-team CONCACAF Final Round scheduled for 11 February - 14 October 2009.

The top three teams from the CONCACAF Final Round in 2009 will automatically qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. CONCACAF's fourth place finisher will play off with CONMEBOL's fifth-place team in a home-and-away series for one of the last berths to the FIFA event.

Second Legs Round Up

The second-leg encounters of the 2010 CONCACAF World Cup Qualification Stage 2 had two surprises and several near upsets last week as two of the 11 teams that advanced from Stage 1 were able to reach the Semifinal Round.

Surinam, who defeated Montserrat early this year in Stage 1, eliminated Guyana from Stage 2 with a 2:1 second-leg win on the road in Georgetown on Sunday and therefore winning the series 3:1 on aggregate score.  This is the first time since the 1977 that Surinam advanced past two rounds of CONCACAF World Cup Qualification.

Another team that were victorious in Stage 1 (over Anguilla), El Salvador came back from a 1:0 deficit to defeat visiting Panama 3:1 in San Salvador and win the series 3:2 on aggregate.

In other second-leg surprises, Trinidad & Tobago scored twice in the 2:0 win over Bermuda in Hamilton and eliminating the hosts 3:2 on aggregate on Sunday, while an own goal gave Haiti a 1:0 triumph on road against Netherlands Antilles in Willemstad.

Also last weekend: Sunday - Cuba defeated Antigua & Barbuda 2:0 (won 8:3 aggregate) in Havana; while the USA topped Barbados 1:0 in Bridgetown (won 9:0 aggregate); Saturday - Guatemala posted a 3:1 win over St. Lucia (won 9:1 on aggregate) in Los Angeles, California; Costa Rica blanked Grenada 3:0 (won 5:2 on aggregate) in San José; and Mexico easily beat Belize by a score of 7:0 (won 9:0 on aggregate) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

In other encounters earlier last week: Jamaica defeated the Bahamas 6:0 (won 13:0 on aggregate) in Greenfield on Wednesday; while Canada posted a 4:1 triumph over St. Vincent & The Grenadines (won 7:1 on aggregate) in Montréal, Quebec on Friday.(Cocacaf)
