Trinidad and Tobago's Under 20 women footballers may have lost their opening two matches to hosts Mexico and USA but they left the tournament on a winning note with a convincing 6-1 victory over Cuba in Group A action at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc. Kennya Cordner and Dernelle Mascall led the way with two goals apiece while Nikeisha Noel and Shanelle Warrick also contributed with a goal each.
Canada and USA finished first in their respective opening round groups at the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Puebla, Mexico held over the weekend.
Jollene Filigno scored three times to lead Canada to a 4:0 win over Costa Rica and claim the top spot in Group B on Saturday at Puebla’s Estadio Cuauhtémoc. Both teams had already progressed to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women’s U-20 Championship .

Preparing for Competition
Marlon Charles, coach of the Trinidad and Tobago women’s football team, is currently preparing to perform dual roles with the national Under-20 and Under-17 squads, in respective CONCACAF Championships.
The Under-20 Championships will be staged in Puebla, Mexico from June 17-28 while Trinidad and Tobago will host the Under-17 Championships from July 17-26.
“Really and truly, with the Under-20s, it’s a compact preparation,” said Charles, during a recent training session at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Sports and Physical Education Centre (SPEC) in St Augustine.
“We had 15 sessions to get the team to go to Mexico because these players were all out in school,” he added. “We really didn’t have a local-based team as such.
“So right now, what’s happening is we’re trying to push these girls into like pre-season preparations for Mexico. It’s going to be a challenge for these young ladies but, again, we’re getting an opportunity to play and this is how we’re looking at it, to go out there and still work hard for Trinidad and Tobago because this is the focus and objective for these young ladies.
“Other than that, we’re trying to prepare as much and work as a team, with the time that we have,” Charles continued. Trinidad and Tobago will join hosts Mexico, Cuba and defending champions USA in Group “A” while Canada, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Nicaragua in Group “B”.
“Overall, 20 players will go to Mexico, which is good, (it) will give some players the opportunity to play at this level,” Charles commented.
With regards to the team’s expectations in Mexico, Charles replied, “The main focus right now is to try to get the team to be compact, (to play) short and tight, because we’re going to play against (the USA). We (also) have Mexico and then Cuba.”
The finalists, as well as the third-placed team, will all advance to the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile from November 19 until December 7, 2008. As far as the Under-17s are concerned, Charles said, “(They are) under a lot of fitness work.”
Charles noted that the girls are involved in a lot of long-distance running. “These runs are just bringing out the mental toughness of the team,” he pointed out. “These players have developed a lot physically, mentally they’re getting there.”
The bulk of the team members are currently involved in O’Level (CXC) exams, with Charles noting, “I have affected players in the way that they come late (to training) but they don’t get away from doing the runs.
“We give that opportunity (since we went them) to become student athletes,” he continued. “We’ll give them the opportunity to do their exams but they’re going to come and do the work that is being done to make the team a challenging team for this qualification in July.”
Hosts TT, Costa Rica, El Salvador and USA will battle in Group “A”, with Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico competing in Group “B”.
Similar to the Under-20s, the finalists and the third-place finisher will progress to the inaugural FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand from October 28 to November 16 2008. (June 13, 2008)
T&T To Host CONCACAF U-17 Championship
Following the draw at the CONCACAF Offices in New York City, the complete fixtures have been announced for the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship that will take place in Trinidad & Tobago from 17-26 July at Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet and Macoya’s Marvin Lee Stadium.
The inaugural eight-team tournament will have two groups of four during the first round from 17-21 July. The semifinals and finals will take place at the Marvin Lee Stadium on 24 and 26 July, respectively.
The hosts, Trinidad & Tobago have been drawn into Group A, to be played at Marvin Lee Stadium, along with Costa Rica, El Salvador and USA, while Canada, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico are in Group B at Dwight Yorke Stadium.
The CONCACAF Tournament will qualify three teams to the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008.
